Curriculum
The Institute of Architecture and Planning understands and teaches architecture as an evolving process that is embedded in a social and scientific context. Questions are discussed in small international teams of architects with many years of practical work experience and course contents are taught according to modern and socially relevant criteria.
Education is structured as a comprehensive integrated package that conveys basic skills that are necessary for practicing architecture in a dedicated manner. Programmes are structured into four succinct module groups that bundle related topics.
Based on fundamental knowledge about construction, materials, theory, history and design architectural topics are explored and defined in an interdisciplinary discourse. As the most important didactic focus this process is supervised by the lecturers in small design studios. Students apply theory in a systematic and goal-oriented manner within the context of their design projects. This facilitates a practical, intensive and personal work situation that is centred around the studio of the institute where students of all semesters come together. This unique learning setting in the dense atmosphere of mutual exchange is enriched by discourse that takes place at regular intervals revolving around social and architectural issues or approaches illustrated in lecture series, film presentations, symposia etc.
the program is structured in modules. In the « Design » module a design project is developed and implemented in small groups under intensive supervision. In the context of the « Building Technology» and « History, Theory and Design» modules, practical knowledge is conveyed in lectures, seminars and exercises that supplement the work completed in the design studios. The « Transfer » module bundles contents and complements the regular study programme by offering excursions, compact projects and programme-related professional experience amounting to 540 hours of work.
The above list of courses structured by semester is only a recommendation for a study programme that is completed within the regular duration of 6 semesters. The module-based structure of all courses allows students to individually tailor the study programme to their needs for the entire duration of studies. This applies to both the course of a semester and the duration of the entire programme. This structure allows for alternating between more and less intensive semesters. As a result students are able to pursue work outside of school to a certain extent, all the while dedicating themselves to their studies based on personal priorities.
The four module groups of the Bachelor’s programme are composed of consecutive modules that comprise several courses. Every course is assigned a certain number of semester hours (weekly supervision in class) and a certain amount of additional work to be completed independently. Together these two components form the recognised study hours (workload). 30 study hours equal 1 ECTS credit. One semester comprises 15 regular coursework weeks and one compact or excursion week.
