Building Physics

Course Content
Especially within the field of Sustainable Design the subject of Building Physics is a determining variable. Based on the understanding of the term ‘Climate Engineering’ architects are asked to provide the highest comfort with the lowest impact on the environment.  Most importantly, they are expected to respect the conditions of the building site. Particularly extreme climatic conditions will have a big influence on the design of a building in terms of materialization, as well as on the building’s volumetry.

Learning Objectives
The learning objectives are to evaluate innovative concepts of building physics and building technology. All considerations will be calculated with simple programs and proved in section, plan, and elevation in scale 1:20.

Approach and Format
Students will calculate the heating energy demands, temperatures of the rooms, etc. in order to get an idea of the effect of building volumetries and surfaces. These calculations will be done with simple-to-use software applications. Students will then learn to use the instruments of building physics as design tools for their studio project.

Building Mechanical Systems

Mandatory Course Sustainable Design - Assignment:
Main focus of the lectures is to develop new energy concepts for buildings. Therefore it is important to analyse the climatic situation and to develop a concept which is adjusted to the resources of the site. Every climate on earth will be taken into consideration.

On the one hand there is a passive strategy without technical means and on the other hand there is a technical strategy. A good balance of both strategies will give the final solution.

Learning Objectives:
The learning objective is to create own energetic concepts for cooling and heating. All considerations will be proved in iconographic plans and in section, plan and elevation in scale 1:20.

Goals:
Student
- will be able to develop own strategies for saving and gaining energy
- will calculate the physical values of a building to dimension the building mechanical system
