The Sustainable Urban Design program focuses on the design of cities and towns with near and far futures in mind. It combines architecture, landscape and civic design with advanced concepts of local energy and water autonomy, to help fight climate change and other challenges to social, economic and environmental health. Founded on traditions of responsible design, it helps participants conceptualize and manage places as authentic settings with a strong genius loci - nurturing global connectedness while building local prosperity at a shrinking ecological footprint.
The program consists of four connected core courses: the Sustainable Urban Design Studio; The Renewable City; Responsible Property Development; and Urban Quality - Assessment and Design. The program is part of the Institute’s urbanSCAPE (Urban Sustainability, Climate and Planning Education) framework that also contains related research, network and outreach efforts.
