he Sustainable Urban Design program focuses on the design of urban areas, cities and even regions, responding to the major opportunities and challenges of today. The architect as urban designer sees our profession expanded into larger formal and conceptual tasks: the city, the village, the human settlement as a world of community and public engagement. Sustainable Urban design combines architecture with community regeneration, public space and urban design, landscape urbanism and civic engagement in placemaking with advanced concepts of local energy and water autonomy, biodiversity and the making of productive landscapes. Its mission is to help fight climate change and other challenges to social, economic and environmental health.
Sustainable Urban Design helps participants conceptualize and manage places as authentic settings with a strong genius loci - nurturing global connectedness while building local prosperity at a shrinking ecological footprint.
The programme consists of four connected core courses: the Sustainable Urban Design Studio; The Renewable City; Responsible Property Development; and Urban Quality - Assessment and Design. The program is part of the Institute’s urbanSCAPE (Urban Sustainability, Climate and Planning Education) framework that also contains related research, network and outreach efforts.
