Following basic education and military service, Olaf Weber studied business administration and economics at the University of the Saarland and the Westphalian Wilhelm's University Muenster, graduating with a Diplom-Kaufmann degree. In 1984 Weber joined the Deutsche Ausgleichsbank (DtA) in Bonn, an institute that was merged with the KfW in 2003. From 1986 onwards Weber worked on financing investments in environmental protection, energy efficiency and renewable energy at DtA, becoming department head in 1993. In 2002 and 2003 Olaf Weber was involved in the 'Hessen Tender', a national pilot project to prepare German companies for European CO2 emmissions trading.
In 2003 Weber reloated to the KfW in Frankfurt and from 2004 to 2009 he acted as head of the department for sustainability of the KfW banking group. Following a two year long return to his previous position as head of the credit department, Weber was put iin charge of environmental and climate protection associated with national funding at the KfW Mittelstandsbank and assigned a supporting role for the executive management for environmental issues of the KfW Group. Besides his work at KfW Weber also serves as a board member at the Belin energy agency, the Berliner Energieagentur GmbH.
