Franz Baumgartner is Professor of Renewable Energy at the ZHAW Zurich University of Applied Science School of Engineering since 2008 and head of the photovoltaic sector within the ZHAW Institute of Energy Systems and Fluid-Engineering. He studied electrical engineering at the technical University of Vienna. In 1989 he started his research activities with his doctoral thesis on solar cell materials at the University of Constance, department of physics, Germany. There he was group leader on thin film research activities and responsible for the development of a solar car and the optimization of the electrical traction system in particular. In 1996 he became professor of electrical engineering at the University of Applied Science in Buchs, Switzerland, conducting several R&D projects with industrial partners to improve measurement techniques in the production process of photovoltaic modules. He is member of the scientific committee of the European Photovoltaic Conferences and the Energy Commission of Liechtenstein.
