Dr. Steffen Lehmann is founding director of the s_Lab Space Laboratory for Architectural Research and Design (Berlin-Adelaide). Born in Stuttgart, he studied at the Architectural Association School in London and worked for James Stirling and Arata Isozaki, before establishing his own research-driven practice in Berlin in 1993. He completed a PhD at the TU-Berlin in 2003. After a decade of building green buildings he was appointed in 2002 as full professor and chair of architecture in Australia. Since 2008 he holds the UNESCO Chair in Sustainable Urban Development for Asia and the Pacific. He established the sd+b Research Centre at the University of South Australia in 2010, which explores concepts of ‘Zero Waste City’, the link between material efficiency and behavior change, and low carbon construction systems. He is editor-in-chief of the Journal of Green Building, editor of the Earthscan Book Series on Sustainable Design and a 2012 Visiting Scholar at UC Berkeley.
