Medals and prizes for the Institute of Architecture and Planning

Architecture projects by graduates and lecturers at the University of Liechtenstein do well when compared internationally. This is shown by the renowned prizes which have been awarded recently. With them, the university wins kudos far beyond national boundaries, and Liechtenstein confirms its standing as an attractive university location.

German awards and scholarships
The Bachelor’s graduates Jakob Fink from Germany and Severine Frehner from Switzerland will now be receiving a DETAIL scholarship  of EUR 500 a month for one year. For the second time, the international architecture trade journal DETAIL and the Sto Foundation were awarding the DETAIL scholarship for promoting young university students in the field of construction and architecture. A jury of five selected the two from 133 applicants.

Professor Urs Meister won the gold medal in the international architecture competition best architects 2013  for his design of a house in Küsnacht. The best architects award is a seal of quality for exceptional architectural performance and positions architects and architectural practices receiving the award at the very top of the international architecture scene. Furthermore, Meister’s design won the hardwood (Laubholz) competition of the Swiss Federal Office for the Environment FOEN and a recognition prize in the Prix Lignum 2012.

Austrian prizes
Master’s graduate Martin Bereuter from Bregenz, Austria, won third prize in the Bregenzerwald handicraft and design competition (Handwerk+Form) with his design of a pair of tradesman’s trousers. Furthermore, he also received a recognition award for his slouch sofa (Lümmelnomade). The competition of the Werkraum Bregenzerwald initiative particularly intends to promote cooperation between craftsmen, designers and architects.

For their design of the Eduard-Wallnöfer-Platz in Innsbruck, Austria, lecturers Kathrin Aste and Hannes Stiefel received first prize in the Tyrol region competition for new construction 2012. With this project they were also nominated for the European Union Prize for Contemporary Architecture – Mies van der Rohe award 2013.

Furthermore, the culture department of the Tyrol regional government awarded lecturer Rainer Köberl the prize for new construction 2012. His model of the town hall and city square in Kufstein and his design of the BTV Mitterweg branch in Innsbruck convinced the jury.

In addition, both projects were honoured with the prestigious clients’ award 2012 (Bauherrenpreis). The Austrian Architects’ Association (Zentralvereinigung der Architekten Österreichs) awards this prize to clients who have made an outstanding contribution to the conception and realization of architectural quality.


Swiss awards
For his residential development “Im Langacher”, Professor Dietrich Schwarz received second place (northern region) in the renownedPrix Lignum 2012  as well as a recognition award (central region) for his residential development complex “Silence” in St. Erhard.

For his model of the Merz bakery in Chur, Professor Conradin Clavuot received a recognition award (eastern region) in the Prix Lignum and the special prize woodworking 2012 (HOLZhandwerk 2012) by Graubünden Holz. The Prix Lignum is a Swiss timber construction prize which is awarded every three years for future-oriented projects using timber in buildings or in interior design.
