Dr. Katia Frey

Current Activity
Katia Frey is an art historian (PhD), specialized in the field of history and theory of urban design with a focus on cultural aspects, urban green and early concepts of urban sustainability. From 1998 to 2016 she was a researcher and lecturer at the Chair for the History and Theory of Urban design at the gta institute of ETH Zurich, where she co-directed the research project "History of Urban Design Theory" and co-edited Anthologie zum Städtebau (5 vol., Berlin: Geb. Mann, 2005, 2008, 2014) and Stadt & Text (Berlin: Geb. Mann, 2010), her contribution dealing especially with the beginnings of the urban design discipline in France and Great-Britain in 18th Century and its modern implementation in the Garden city movement. Current research interests mainly concern gender topics in architecture and planning: "Flora Ruchat-Roncati at ETH 1985-2002. Professor, Planner, Theoretician", funded by the Swiss National Research Foundation SNF, the exhibition and publication project Swiss Women's exhibition SAFFA 1958, and a biographical reseach on Swiss Women Architects. Latest publications are Theoretikerinnen des Städtebaus and Frauen Blicken auf die Stadt (both ed. with Eliana Perotti, Berlin: Reimer, 2015 and 2019). Currently she is working on the SNF Project "SAFFA 1958. Eine nationale Bühne für Schweizer Architektinnen und Gestalterinnen. Städtebau, Architektur und Ausstellungsdesign im internationalen Kontext" at ZHAW and is teaching at the University of Liechtenstein.
