The Association for Information Systems (AIS) has awarded Professor Jan vom Brocke, who holds the Hilti Chair of Business Process Management (BPM) at the University of Liechtenstein, the AIS Award for Innovation in Teaching. The award recognizes outstanding achievements in teaching based on high degrees of innovation as well as technical and didactic abilities.

The awards ceremony took place during the 34th International Conference on Information Systems, which was held at Bocconi University in Milan in December 2013 and attended by over 1,500 researchers from all over the world. Jan vom Brocke was honoured for his innovative achievements in the teaching of Collaborative Business in the IT and Business Process Management degree programme at the University of Liechtenstein. He has taught this course in this form for the third year running and to students from over 30 countries.

Modern collaboration tools

Students collaborate virtually within international teams, which are deliberately designed heterogeneously and in which the members do not know each other. During the semester, the teams use various collaboration tools to work on joint projects and thereby experience the challenges of modern collaboration. The participants learn not only how IT can help to overcome limitations, but also how important it is to have the skills to successfully communicate with people within various contexts. These skills are taught in innovative ways and are continuously reflected upon together with the students.

An exemplary model beyond Liechtenstein

The scientists Dr. Armin Stein, Dr. Katrin Bergener, Sara Hofmann and Elena Gorbacheva from the University of Münster, as well as Dr. Christina vom Brocke and Stefan Debortoli from the University of Liechtenstein, were also involved in the implementation of this innovative didactic concept, while the European Research Center for Information Systems (ERCIS) and the Liechtenstein Chapter of the AIS (LCAIS) also played crucial roles during the realization of the project. In the future, universities that have already shown strong interest in collaboration will incorporate this concept into their teaching technologies.
