Mulled-wine evening at the University of Liechtenstein’s student residence: On Wednesday, 5 December, the students living in the Vaduz student residence thanked their neighbours with mulled wine and home-made biscuits.

The aim of the evening was for the students of the multicultural student residence to get to know their neighbours better. On this occasion, the students from over 30 different countries provided insights into their own Christmas traditions. The evening’s highlight was a premiere of a special kind: the University Choir, which was founded this semester, gave its first public performance. Under the guidance of Johannes von Schönfeld, the choir of students and university staff performed a selection of carols – from classical pieces such as “Heiligste Nacht” by Michael Haydn to the well-known “O du fröhliche”, as well as a selection of spiritual songs.

Young meet young at heart

In the past weeks, the kitchens on all the floors of the student residence were transformed into Christmas biscuit factories. With the help of senior citizens from the “Young meet young at heart” group and the University of Liechtenstein buddies, the residents baked a range of biscuits based on recipes from all over the world. During the Introduction Week at the start of the winter semester, visiting students Charline Vanbesien from Belgium, Arwen Weber from Germany and Sune Jorgensen from Denmark designed a Christmas card, poster and cup for the mulled-wine event. Following tradition, the cups were distributed throughout the neighbourhood before the event, as invitations to the celebration which took place in front of the student residence.

Cultural diversity in Liechtenstein

The University of Liechtenstein’s student residence offers 71 living spaces for students from abroad or visiting students from partner universities around the world who are attending the University of Liechtenstein for one or two semesters. Currently, students from 30 nations, such as Indonesia, the USA, Georgia, Iran, Canada, South Korea and Poland, are living in Vaduz. Due to this mix of diverse cultures, life at the student residence is rich in new experiences. Regular intercultural events also ensure that local students are included.
