With the introduction of Data Science as a new specialization starting in the winter semester 2015/2016, the Institute  of nformation Systems at the University of Liechtenstein is adding a new and forward-looking topic to its range of courses offered.

The new special subject in the Master of Science (MSc) in Information Systems  at the University of Liechtenstein has been developed in close cooperation with regional industry. For some years already professors at the Institute  of Information Systems have been successfully conducting research and  offering consulting in the field of Big Data, and they are now systematically extending these skills to education.

At the forefront worldwide

This makes Liechtenstein one of the first universities worldwide to offer a - Master of Science course in Data Science and Business Process Management. The new specialization in Data Science is largely based on the disciplines of Business Intelligence, Big Data and Business Analytics – for example in connection with the analysis of data derived from social networks like Twitter. This makes it an ideal addition to the already existing specialization in Business Process Management.

‘The topics of our special subjects, Business Process Management and Data Science, focus on the usefulness of Information Technology to companies. Skills in these areas are increasingly in demand on the job market – as we have seen from direct experience,’ comments Dr Bernd Schenk, Executive Director of the MSc course.

Personal and close to practice

In this degree course, students benefit from an ideal student to teacher ratio.  The small class sizes and the direct contact with the professors, gives them the best possible basis for their academic studies. In close cooperation with  leading industry partners from the region, like Hilti AG and Ivoclar Vivadent, the MSc in Information Systems also offers its students exciting practical projects each semester.

Graduates of the MSc course are thus ideally prepared to embark on a  professional career in the field of data science or business process management.

‘Many students start working for regional companies even before they finish their courses, and so make a seamless transition from academic study to a profession,’ says Professor Jan vom Brocke, holder of the Hilti Chair for Business Process Management and head of the Institute Information Systems.
