From August 2014 to January 2015, students of architecture, landscape architecture and municipal planning from all over the world were invited, under the auspices of the Global Schindler Award 2015,  to create a vision for the future urban development of Shenzhen – a metropolis of millions in the Chinese Pearl River delta which has shot up out of nothing in the last two decades. Under the motto ‘Designing the City as a Resource’, the challenge of this architectural competition was the opportunity offered to candidates to investigate one of the most densely populated cities of the globe, and to highlight its potential for sustainable development. Demographic, economic and cultural studies served as the basis for the proposals of the students from the University of Liechtenstein, whose project concentrated on possible ways of turning the massive amounts of building rubble with which the city is burdened into sustainable and productive municipal landscapes. They developed their proposals under the auspices of the Architecture MA programme of the University of Liechtenstein, with the support of highly regarded experts in the fields of sociology, municipal planning and communication.

An outstanding opportunity for young architects

With a prize fund of 150,000 US dollars, the Global Schindler Award is one of the most richly endowed prizes in the field of architecture that has ever been thrown open to international competition. At the same time the Schindler Award is an excellent opportunity for young students to have their work appraised by an international jury made up of acknowledged experts in their chosen field. Among the twelve members of the jury are Professor Farshid Moussavi of Harvard University, Professor Philipp Rode of the London School of Economics, Professor Kongjian Yu of the University of Peking and Professor Matthias Sauerbruch of the Universität der Künste [University of the Arts] in Berlin. Professor Kees Christiaanse of ETH Zürich [the Zurich Federal Institute of Technology] is in charge of the competition.

Prize award in Shenzhen

Together with their academic mentor, Professor Peter A. Staub, the two nominated students will be travelling on the invitation of the Schindler Award to the prizegiving ceremony to be held in Shenzhen, China, on 30 April. ‘Our being nominated, out of 250 submitted projects, for one of these twelve extremely well endowed prizes is a fantastic accolade for the students and for the University of Liechtenstein,’ said Peter Staub, clearly over the moon about the success of his students. The University of Liechtenstein team are still in the dark about just which prize they have won. The precise ranking of the projects will only be announced on the day.
