Abstract

Like many European regions, the Alpine Rhine Valley is characterised by a heterogeneous mix of settlement areas, transport infrastructure, settlement-related open spaces, agricultural areas, and open landscape structures. Planning science tries to describe this phenomenon of urbanisation through different terms: agglomeration, urban landscape, urban area, intermediate city, sprawl town, etc. The subject of this project is the undeveloped but publicly accessible "in-between" spaces within the urban landscape of Liechtenstein. The underlying hypothesis of this paper is that there is little aesthetic attention on and activation of these in-between spaces in science, planning policy, and practice. The research project tackles two facets of this. (1) The everyday landscapes: in-between spaces are examined from the perspective of perception in the case of Vaduz, Liechtenstein. (2) Conceptual landscapes: in-between spaces are viewed from the rational perspective of planning, systematisation, and control. Therefore, Urban Living Labs (ULL) are applied as a research method with which the level of the everyday landscape can be operationalised in the case of Vaduz.
