As the winter semester gets under way, for the 10th time students at the University of Liechtenstein are gaining practical experience of disciplines outside their field of study. On Saturday, 15 September, the population of Liechtenstein is invited to attend the final presentations of the Compact Project Week from 1 p.m. to 6 p.m.

Under the guidance of visiting lecturers from Liechtenstein and abroad, some 200 students are spending the week working in 16 workshops on the university campus to look beyond the boundaries of their own field of study with a change of content, methods and lecturers – a concept that has already drawn international attention. On the theme of “Social design”, they are doing community service and seeking contacts with initiatives, institutions and NGOs from Liechtenstein and the region.

This comes first ...
Along with co-initiators of the MorgenLand Festival and renowned Liechtenstein chefs, students are experiencing all that regional and seasonal food culture has to offer and are tempted to taste it in a mobile kitchen on the campus. In the “Upcycling” workshop run by Kulturverein 94, the participants are turning their own design ideas into reality using the waste created by our throwaway society. Together with the Viennese game designer Lev Ledit, they are using the content of the AL Magazine of the Institute of Architecture to develop a party game for adults. And in Joanna van der Zanden’s “Repairing as an act of resistance” workshop, students practice social and sustainable design by repairing things.

... transmitting and receiving ...
This title covers five workshops on the subject of social communication. In “Social slam”, the poetry slammer Lars Ruppel is providing a platform for opinions and everyday poetry. Students are working with the Swiss Association for the Deaf (SGB-FSS) to develop a performance in sign language. Together with Defekt GmbH of Zurich, the university radio “Störsender” (jamming station) is being set up and reporting live from the campus with radio journalist Alex Hasler. And Berlin poet and actress Etta Streicher is helping students produce lyrical manifestos as a mini-drama in public.

... not by bread alone.
The field of art and culture is also addressing the subject of “Social design”. Working with the Vaduz refugee centre, the artist Thomas Bachler is developing a shadow theatre in his workshop. In the “Stencil toolkit” workshop of the artist Patrick Thomas, students are working with GZ Resch in Schaan using a stencil toolkit to design templates for public protest signs. Zurich publisher Dino Simonett is working with the Eastern Switzerland Blind Association (OBV) to convey architecture to blind people in book form. In “Sound domino”, Marc Vogel, the drummer of the Helbock Dietrich Vogel Trio, and the Therapeutic Pedagogy Centre (Heilpädagogisches Zentrum) in Schaan are opening up basic sound experiences. Students are founding a garage band with singer-songwriter Claudia Nentwich. And the workshop run by Jochen Heckmann is contacting the large second-hand shop in Buchs to develop a choreography that explores the everyday use of furniture. Running in tandem with the Compact Project Week, a Visiting School of the renowned Architectural Association School of Architecture in London is being held at the University of Liechtenstein for the first time.

The results of the projects will be presented in the form of exhibitions and installations, concerts and performances during a closing event on the university campus on Saturday, 15 September, from 1 p.m. to 6 p.m. Anyone interested is welcome to attend; entrance is free. The closing drinks reception with chillout party starts at 7 p.m.
