The challenges of e-commerce are playing an increasingly important role for small and medium enterprises (SMEs).  On 14 May 2013, as part of the Solid SME Knowledge events series, the Affiliated Institute SME Centre of the University of Liechtenstein is hosting an informational and networking event on this topic for SMEs in the Rhine Valley region.

E-commerce is becoming ever more important. Some of the major catalogue companies have achieved web-based turnovers of a magnitude which was still unthinkable until comparatively recently. But the Internet is not only a critical distribution channel for large companies; an online shop has almost become a prerequisite for SMEs as well. Today, a number of free and fee-levied systems compete for the custom of the shop operators.

Combining theory and practice

The current event in the Solid SME Knowledge series will focus on this trend and examine it from different perspectives on Tuesday, 14 May 2013, from 6 p.m. onwards. On the one hand, theoretical foundations and conditions for business-to-consumer (B2C) commerce will be examined. On the other hand, practical questions will be answered concerning the implementation of a shop-based solution with corresponding payment systems. The factors for successfully implementing an online shop will be considered in particular. The event will therefore provide valuable input and recommendations for action for SMEs in the Rhine Valley region.

The theoretical foundations will be presented by Professor Bernd Schenk from the Hilti Chair of Business Process Management at the University of Liechtenstein. In the practical component, the experiences of building and developing the online shop of Liechtensteinische Post AG will be presented. After the lectures, the speakers will be available for questions and discussions. At the subsequent drinks reception, attendees will have the opportunity for the exchange of ideas and active networking with experts and other SMEs facing similar challenges.
