Abstract
In 2007, Bennis and O'Tool argued that business schools had lost their way. The relentless focus on rigor and scientific journal papers, which seems to be the basis for all benchmarks (from individual assessments to practically all b-school/university rankings) is making us loose the focus on meeting the real needs of our three most important stake holder groups, students, industry and society. As a consequence, if we don't meet their requirements, why should they support us? The talk will present a taxonomy of different types of engaged scholarship based on a survey of IS academics. Finally, a number of concrete examples of how an IS researcher may develop a strategy for being lucky with engaged scholarship.
Short bio
Dr. Niels Bjørn-Andersen is Professor of Business IT at the Copenhagen Business School (CBS). He served as director of Executive EMBA program in 'E-management' from 1998 - 2005, as director of the 'Center for e-Business' from 1998 -2005, and as director of 'Center for Enterprise Systems' from 2005 -2011. He has more than 50 peer-reviewed journal articles, 25 books and 200 other publications. He has carried out collaborative research with organizations like CISCO, Heineken, IBM, Microsoft and SAP especially as regards topics like IT governance, E-business, ERP-systems, IT for inter-organizational trade, and IT for M&As. He has been the recipient of more than 20 large external research grants predominantly from EU research bodies.
Niels was president of Association for Information Systems (AIS) in 1996. He has been awarded the prestigious AIS-LEO award (hitherto only awarded to four Europeans), and the IFIP Outstanding Services Award. The queen of Denmark has also knighted him for his contributions to the field of Information Systems.
