Identities are not something given, yet they are a matter of course. We shape and change them permanently, to reflect on us and on our cultural context. On the one hand, traditions and cultures of memory play an important role for this social process. On the other hand, we negotiate our cultural identities also by critically discussing our present and by developing visions. The focus, however, is man himself, who constructs identities through versatile forms of (in)tangible communication.

In winter semester 2016/17, we deal with the issue of cultural identities. As preparation and discussion in the design studios, three lectures illuminate the many facets of this phenomenon. The topic will be elaborated on not only from the perspective of architects and spatial planners, but will also be expanded by cultural studies, curatorial, historical, artistic and sociological perspectives. Through the discussion of specific places on our doorstep as well as with abstract spaces in our global world, the lecturers scrutinize our thinking, designing and our fields of activity as architects and spatial planners.

Cultural identities are expressed through cultural actions (customs) and artifacts. Which other facets do express our cultural identities? What does specific usages and typologies express about a certain culture (about saunas in Scandinavia or coffee houses in the Arab world, or different residential typologies in urban or rural areas)? And actually: why had Ötzi not lived in an igloo ?
The German-Austrian architect Anna Heringer will talk about her socially engaged projects in Bangladesh, China and Africa, which always respond to local needs. On the one hand, she highlights the way of how she uses materials and typologies in different (building) cultural contexts. On the other hand, she introduces the versatile actors who are involved in this process and help to expand our European understanding of construction processes.

As an architect and honorary professor of the UNESCO Chair of Earthen Architecture, Building Cultures and Sustainable Development she is focussing on the use of natural building materials. She has been actively involved in development cooperation in Bangladesh since 1997. Her thesis, the School in Rudrapur got realized in 2005 and won the Aga Khan Award for Architecture in 2007. Over the years, Anna has realized further projects in Asia, Africa, and Europe. She lectures worldwide and has been a visiting professor at various universities, including Stuttgart, Linz, Vienna, Zürich. She received numerous honors, including the renowned Loeb Fellowship at Harvard’s GSD, the AR Emerging Architecture Awards, the Global Award for Sustainable Architecture and a RIBA International Fellowship.
