# The Analysis of Bitcoin Transaction Patterns
Bitcoin is currently the most popular cryptocurrency in the world which has already surpassed the phase of a short-term phenomenon At least since March 2017 when one Bitcoin gained parity with one ounce gold, it came clear to many economists that Bitcoin will not go away anytime soon but seems destined to stay relevant in the future. Even though the U.S. Security and Exchange Commission (SEC) hasn't approved an ETF (Exchange Traded Fund) in summer 2016 based on Bitcoin, it didn't hold back the market price and according exchange rate skyrocketing till today.
The presentation aims to summarise the current approaches to analyse Bitcoin transaction patterns and the according market participants as well as outlining a new analysis approach to the problem statement utilising graph databases and graph-algorithms / machine learning being used as a basis for the following discussions.
Jürgen Schatzmann is a 2nd year PhD Student at the Business School of the University of Salzburg. In his day job he works at a large international consulting company as IT Project and Program Manager.
