Curricula

Bachelor's degree programme in Architecture (01.09.2008)

Description

Strength theory

  • Basic principles, section properties, simple states of stress
  • Structural strains and deformations

Lecture Goals

Based on the skills acquired in the module Building Technology I and in line with the objectives of the module Building Technology II the goal of this course is to teach the principles of strength theory.

Learning Outcomes

At the end of the course each student should have the ability to demonstrate and/or work with:

  • familiarity with the basic principles of strength theory, including deformation, normal stress, bending stress and shearing stress.
  • the ability to design simple wood or steel-reinforced supports.
  • the ability to approximate the degree of deflection for statically determinate wood or steel-reinforced supports.
  • understanding of the principles of the strength theory and the ability to apply these skills in the context of coherent design projects.
  • the ability to adequately manage time and physical resources for projects, both in terms of individual work input and as a member of a team.
  • the ability to outline ideas, information and individual projects in a comprehensible manner visually, in oral or written form.
  • the ability to communicate complex ideas to fellow students and instructors in a well-structured and coherent manner.
  • the ability to present and evaluate arguments, information and ideas relevant to the discipline of architecture.

Lectures Method

Lecture followed by practical examples.
Construction site visits and building inspections.

Admission Requirements

The modules of the Bachelor's program in architecture are structured consecutively (they build on each other).

  • It is recommended to take the module Building Technology I prior to enrolling this course.

Literature

Course script, codes (Normenwerke SIA and Eurocode), charts

Exam Modalities

Written examination of the learning outcomes of the course

Assessment

The course has to be passed with a sufficient grade (minimum grade of 4.0).
The module grade will be determined from the weighted average of the single course grades:

Building Construction 2 33%
Structural Design 2 33%
Building Physics 2 33%
