Call for Submissions

The first of three symposium forming part of the Crafting the Facade: Reuse, Reinvent, Reactivate Erasmus + will take place in Glasgow on the 1-3 of July.

The symposium will focus on the use of stone as a facade material and will provide an opportunity for participants to share design, research and construction thinking on the subject, developments design and research trajectories which began at the Crafting the Facade Stone workshop in October 2015.

Themes
The day will be structured around three themes:

Reuse: Cultures and traditions in stone, including; case and building studies, histories and measured comparisons, vernacular and traditional building techniques and practice, conservation and renovation, meaning through stone

Reinvent: Contemporary practice and thinking, including; insights from practice, current best practice, design in the contemporary city, facade as mediator, local versus international

Reactivate: Speculations of future practice in stone, including; innovative construction, speculations in stone and tectonics, opportunities and limits


Contributions are invited from architecture students and staff within the three participating schools.

Abstract submissions
Contributions are possible in three distinct formats.

Short papers, written contributions of between 2,000 and 2,500 words
Design Projects, comprehensive design proposals
Posters

Selected contributes of short papers and design proposals will have the opportunity to present their work on the day.
Posters will be exhibited during the symposium

If you wish to submit an abstract for consideration, email a short abstract or description of your project (no more than 300 words) to craftingthefacade@gsa.ac.uk. You must include "Crafting the Facade" in the subject line of the email, and the theme you wish to contribute to. Group contributions will be considered

The deadline for submission is Monday 15th May. All submissions will be reviewed by a selection panel, and selected contributors will be informed by Friday 27th May

Selected contributions will form part of the published proceedings of the symposium and may also be used in the Crafting the Facade website and resource.

A series of supporting events around the exploration of stone on the 1st and 3rd of July will be open to contributors. Entry to the symposium programme is free to contributors.
