Beschreibung

The project "Towards a Context-sensitive Conceptual Framework and Design Principles for Internet of Things Solutions" identifies how the material properties of Internet of Things (IoT) technologies provide salient affordance primitives (action potentials) in terms of sensing, storing, processing, actuating, and networking and how these translate into key process-level affordances that allow for emergent functionality and emergent control structures. It is argued that we are seeing a shift from established dual hierarchies (control and function) to function-control networks that are characterized by multidimensional information flows, decentralized information processing, distributed control, and human actors as intermediaries. Against this background, the results highlight that one can conceive of the IoT as a global infrastructure for digital innovation. The project further identifies key i mplementation challenges due to the contextual nature of IoT solutions in practice.
