Abstract

Digital technology has radically changed the nature of innovation by giving rise to a highly fluid innovation process, more distributed agency and profoundly heterogeneous knowledge. Considering the distinct nature of digital innovation, relying on Actor Network Theory and building on the notion of innovation as being doubly embedded in a knowledge network and a social network, we argue that it is important to add a third type of network - the digital network that encompasses digital technology as non-human actants. We develop a triple-embedded network model and theoretically reason about the role, distinctive skillsets, and knowledge elements of digital innovation actors as special nodes in networks, who play an instrumental role in generating and implementing digital innovations.
