Abstract

Prior research argued that individual actors' ability and willingness to embrace and respond to tensions is rooted in their individual-level paradox mindset and their surrounding behavioral context. So far, this context has been described as being based on values or inherent traits that might also change over time. Less is known about how cultural contexts and situation-specific characteristics might shape individual responses to paradoxical tensions. Building upon a situated dynamics approach, aside paradox mindset as values-based mechanism, schema activation and norm salience are introduced to constitute additional context-based mechanisms that shape individual responses to paradoxical tensions. All three mechanisms are proposed to be complementary, each of them taking prevalence dependent on situation-specific characteristics.
