Abstract

Although self-regulation could be an important prerequisite for active and effective leadership empirical studies on the relationship between self-regulation and leadership are scarce. In the present study the self-regulatory modes (assessment, locomotion) are related to a broad variety of different leadership styles (transformational, transactional, and laissez-faire leadership). It was assumed that an active and action-oriented mode of self-regulation (locomotion) has positive relations to active and effective leadership (transformational leadership). Additionally, negative associations to inactive and ineffective leadership behavior (laissez-faire) were expected. Furthermore, it was hypothesized that a cognitive, observational, and critical mode of self-regulation (assessment) is associated with a controlled transactional leadership behavior (active management by exception). With a sample of 374 leaders results showed that both hypotheses could be confirmed. Findings are discussed with regard to their theoretical and practical relevance.
