Beschreibung

Games have long been used as powerful training instruments. They help create working models of human interaction, which enable students to acquire and apply new knowledge and skills. They are especially useful for sensitive topics as they engage players emotionally in the low-risk environment created by an artificial field of play.
The Game "New Horizons" (Crawford, 2016, S. 1) is based on the concept of "Diversophy" (S. 2) and engages intercultural and social interaction through a specific card game.
The game empowers those who play it to work and communicate constructively across differences. The game takes players from "ethnocentricity" (S. 2) - being centered in one's own culture, the way we find ourselves when we first face diversity - to "diversophy" (S. 2), a state of higher cultural sensitivity and skill. These skills will be transferred to and enrich students`work and private life.

Ziele

On their path to improved cultural competence, students, through actively creating and playing this game, facilitate interaction and dialogue through game play, with the overall goal of increasing awareness, understanding and empathy in intercultural situations.
A: Self competence:

  • comprehension and awareness in intercultural situations
  • empathy for a diverse society
  • tolerance for ambiguity

B. Professional expertise: students know and apply the basic theories for intercultural communication
C. Methods competence:
  • Reproduction of intercultural competences
  • challenge students´factual knowledge about specific cultural topics
  • enhance communication and teambuilding skills
  • put students in situations that are beyond their control. Some situations are "positive" (+) and some "negative" (-). These situations allow students to experience, in a non-threatening way, how differences can create unexpected benefits or costs
  • experience knowledge from different cultures and recommendations that encourage students to look for opportunities to apply it in their work or life.

D. Social competence: Application of intercultural competences in regional settings
