Description

  • Sanitation
  • Hot & cold water systems and waste water treatment (incl. alternatives)
  • Building and site drainage
  • Design of artificial lighting
  • High-voltage power distribution systems
  • Low-voltage power distribution systems
  • Coordination of building mechanical systems (required space, routing)
  • Noise protection of building mechanical systems
  • Specialized building mechanical systems (Minergie-certified)

Lecture Goals

Based on the skills acquired in the modules Building Technology I, II and III and in line with the objectives of the module Building Technology IV the goal of this course is to introduce and expand further on the principles of building mechanical systems.

Learning Outcomes

At the end of the course each student should have the ability to demonstrate and/or work with:

  • basic knowledge about heating, ventilation, sanitation and electrical installation.
  • the ability to coordinate these systems and integrate them into the building.
  • well-founded and integrated knowledge about building mechanical systems and the ability to skillfully employ said knowledge in context of a coherent energy efficient design project that reflects the architectural intent.
  • the ability to determine dimensions of building mechanical systems and identify the required space for such systems within the building.
  • the ability to communicate with professionals and supervise their work.
  • the ability to work independently and demonstrate initiative and objectivity when carrying out projects.
  • the ability to outline ideas, information and individual projects in a clear and precise manner visually, verbally or in a written form.
  • the ability to communicate complex information with varying objectives to various target groups.
  • the ability to critically evaluate statements regarding problems relevant to the discipline of architecture.

Lectures Method

Lecture followed by practical examples.
Construction site visits and building inspections.

Admission Requirements

The modules of the Bachelor's program in architecture are structured consecutively (they build on each other).

  • Successful completion of the module Building Technology I prior to enrollment.
  • It is recommended to take the modules Building Technology II and III prior to enrolling this course.

Written examination of the learning outcomes of the course

Assessment

The course has to be passed with a sufficient grade (minimum grade of 4.0).
The module grade will be determined from the weighted average of the single course grades:
