100% Renewable Liechtenstein?

From 8th to 20th June 2013, the EU financed Erasmus Intensive Programme (IP) «Renewable Energy Finance» took place at the University of Liechtenstein. International students from 4 different universities have been sharing their ideas regarding the opportunities, innovational financial tools and future of the renewable energy sector.

Erasmus IP Program Adding Value to the Development of Renewable Energy in Liechtenstein 

From 8th to 20th June 2013, the EU financed Erasmus Intensive Programme (IP) «Renewable Energy Finance» took place at the University of Liechtenstein. International students from 4 different universities (University of Liechtenstein, Lappeenranta University of Technology, University of Bergamo and University of Cyprus) have been sharing their ideas regarding the opportunities, innovational financial tools and future of the renewable energy sector. 

A report by the participants of the Erasmus IP program Nicole Čechová from Tcheque Republic (University of Liechtenstein), Mai Anh Le from Vietnam (Lappeenranta University of Technology), Elena Locatelli and Enrico Veneziano from Italy (Università degli studi di Bergamo).

The Erasmus IP program, hosted by the Chair in Business Administration, Banking and Financial Management of the University of Liechtenstein, consists of variety of academic input from the side of the students, professors and professionals as well as on-site experience with company visits in the region. 34 students have been asked to develop and present an academic paper on diverse topics such as risk management, incentive policies, financial feasibility and quantitative analysis. In addition, students analyzed several case studies on renewable energy. 

Focus on renewable energy


Renewable energies are reaching a new era and Erasmus Intensive Program (IP) in Liechtenstein concentrating on the role of finance in renewable energies supports its development. During ten intensive days of lectures and presentations, a conference, social events and visits of different renewable energy companies, many hidden issues about this new investment area have been revealed to the program participants who come from different countries and backgrounds.

The program has not only provided insight into the renewable energy sector and its investment opportunities, but also collected participants´ inputs and developed a broader knowledge of how strategic finance can pose to the development of renewable energies and can provide benefit to the society. Also, many great exciting experiences from attending students in this Erasmus IP about the beautiful country of Liechtenstein were heard. 

Company visits in the region

Academic research has been tightly integrated with think-thank speeches and company visits to Lightenergy AG (FL), Solarcomplex AG (DE) and TEL Solar AG (CH), where CEOs and company representatives have presented to students their core businesses and projects. Operating in many industries of renewable energy market, these companies have promoted their projects from the start-up to the maturity stage:

Lightenergy AG has presented its business plan about an innovative system suited for urban environment, the UrbanPlant. Solarcomplex AG showed three different plants, a 2.2 MW Solar park in Rickelshausen, the First Bio‐Energy village in Mauenheim able to supply energy to approximately 400 inhabitants and a 650 MW small-hydropower plant in Musikinsel Singen. And TEL Solar AG gave an insight into its productive plants for the mass production of environmentally sustainable solar modules.

Awareness for the future


Moreover, Prof. Dr. Menichetti presented and moderated the First Renewable Energy Dialogue in Liechtenstein at the University of Liechtenstein, where professors, entrepreneurs and financial experts shared their knowledge and expertise. The event also drew the attention of the public audience, gathering experts from nearly all over the world.

The vice-prime minister of Liechtenstein Dr. Zwiefelhofer acknowledged students and professors, outlining the great scope of the program in building awareness of the renewable energy issues and exploring new sustainable opportunities for the financial sector in the near future.
