The trial day offered by the Institute of Architecture and Planning on 10 April 2013 provides interested parties with the opportunity to gain insights into the Bachelor’s degree programme in Architecture, and to learn more about the basic principles of design and construction by taking part in a small project.

The trial day is designed with high-school students and novices in mind. Alongside a guided tour of the faculty and short lectures on the topic “What is architecture?”, a practice-orientated workshop teaches the fundamental elements of architecture. Plans and sectional drawings are used to define the scale, structure and programme, which are then immediately tested using a three-dimensional model.

Discovering what it’s like to study architecture
The most important aspects of the degree programme in Architecture are simulated on this day. This also includes becoming a part of the creative atmosphere in the faculty’s design studio and gaining as realistic an impression as possible of daily university life. Any questions regarding the programme and future professional prospects will of course also be answered.

Learning from nature
The workshop, which lasts from 9.00 a.m. to 4.30 p.m., draws on examples from nature. Various fruits and different types of vegetable are cut up and examined in terms of their structure, materiality and growth in order to derive architectural structures from these. In this manner, a star fruit can become a palace, and half a pepper can be used to create apartment buildings, for example. The results are exhibited at the end of the day and discussed over vegetable dips and fruit salad.
