Award for professional journal of the Universities of Liechtenstein and St. Gallen

After five years of partnership with the University of St. Gallen, the editorial team of the University of Liechtenstein has been able to register an extremely respectable result for its ‘Zeitschrift für KMU & Entrepreneurship’ (ZfKE), which has risen from its former ‘D’ rating to achieve ‘C’ status in the Jourqual 3 rating, the leading German-language ranking list for business management journals.

After five years of partnership with the University of St. Gallen, the editorial team of the University of Liechtenstein has been able to register an extremely respectable result for its ‘Zeitschrift für KMU & Entrepreneurship’ (ZfKE) [‘Small Business and Entrepreneurship Journal’], which has risen from its former ‘D’ rating to achieve ‘C’ status in the Jourqual 3 rating, the leading German-language ranking list for business management journals.

To generate the ranking list, over 1100 members of the Verband der Hochschullehrer für Betriebswirtschaft e.V (VHB) [German Academic Association for Business Research] awarded a total of 64,113 assessments to journals in recent months. Of the 934 journals under consideration, 651 passed the threshold of receiving 25 assessments and so received a rating. The Liechtenstein / St.Gallen journal has now achieved the ‘C’ rating it had aspired to, after working consistently to this end for the past five years. As a result, ZfKE has now been definitively raised to the category of ‘Recognised academic business management journals’. Only one German-language professional journal, the ‘Zeitschrift für betriebswirtschaftliche Forschung’ [‘Journal for Business Management Research’] made into the next higher rating class and obtained a ‘B’ classification.

High relevance for both theory and practice

ZfKE is the only German-language journal for the research fields of small to medium-sized companies, entrepreneurship and family businesses. Printed by the highly regarded traditional printing firm Duncker & Humblot in Berlin, it publishes articles with high academic aspirations which at the same time have practical relevance in relation to the business practices of small companies. Since it first came out in 1952, ZfKE has been consistently further developed, and today it works with a ‘double blind’ appraisal system and an internationally distinguished panel of appraisers. For the last five years Dr Ruth Jochum-Gasser and Professor Sascha Kraus of the University of Liechtenstein have been responsible for the magazine as Editors in Chief.

Position in the academic community

Based on the planning schedule originally envisaged, the five-year term of office of the present editorial and publishing team finishes with the issue that comes out this month. With the magazine’s recent outstanding result in the rankings, the academics of the Universities of Liechtenstein and St. Gallen have received a well-deserved reward for their five years of successful partnership work. ‘This success will emphasise and reinforce the standing of the professional journal in the academic community for years to come,’ commented Professor Urs Fueglistaller of the Swiss Research Institute of Small Business and Entrepreneurship of the University of St. Gallen, who in conjunction with Professor Urs Baldegger, holder of the Van Riemsdijk Chair of Entrepreneurship at the University of Liechtenstein, has been responsible for the publication of ZfKE up to and including the current issue.
