Children’s University: learning about money

What exactly is money, and why is it so important? Who invented it? What happens to the money I put in my piggy bank? The answers to these and other questions will be explored by the participants at the Children’s University together with Dr. Georg Peter, assistant professor at the Chair in Business Administration, Banking and Financial Management at the University of Liechtenstein, and his team.

With the help of an interactive station-based course, the children will use play money and sweets to examine the function of money as a method of payment and exchange. They will learn about foreign currencies and the meaning of exchange rates in a quiz, and experience the principles of saving and lending using a simple everyday example.

A visit from the Swiss National Bank

At a station hosted by the Liechtenstein Numismatic Society, the children will discover the development of forms of payment from antiquity to modernity, and will also have the opportunity to touch old currencies and coins dating from over two millennia, including from the Principality of Liechtenstein.

A team from the Swiss National Bank will also visit the Liechtenstein Children’s University and reveal the most important security features on Swiss banknotes, so that the junior scholars can learn to easily tell real banknotes from fake ones.

The event is followed by a healthy afternoon snack for all

BEPO side programme: your child’s approach to money

What skills should children and young people have in order to safely engage with financial institutions and products? How does one best prepare them for the real world in this regard? What opportunities and risks await them?

As part of the BEPO side programme for adults, Professor Michael Hanke, Professor of Finance at the University of Liechtenstein, will give a lecture providing answers to these questions. The subsequent discussion is aimed primarily at parents and guardians. Yet the topics are also relevant for teachers as well as for children’s and youth advisors at financial institutions.
