Earth Hour 2013 in Liechtenstein on 23 March

The WWF Earth Hour is a simple idea which at lightning speed became a global phenomenon: millions of people turn off their lights on the same evening. On 23 March 2013, countless buildings and tourist attractions in thousands of cities were plunged into darkness for 60 minutes – including the University of Liechtenstein.

The WWF Earth Hour is a simple idea which at lightning speed became a global phenomenon: millions of people turn off their lights on the same evening. On 23 March 2013, countless buildings and tourist attractions in thousands of cities have been plunged into darkness for 60 minutes – including the University of Liechtenstein.

The building of the University of Liechtenstein on 23 March before and during the Earth Hour 2013:

How and why it all began
Launched in Australia in 2007, over 150 countries around the world are now involved. This year, lights will go out across the entire world at 8.30 p.m. local time on Saturday, 23 March 2013. Whether it is the Brandenburg Gate in Berlin, the Opera House in Sydney, the Chapel Bridge in Lucerne or people’s homes – all will remain dark for an hour, thereby becoming symbols for climate protection.

Earth Hour 2013 in the energy country of Liechtenstein
Liechtenstein will be joining in once more this year. The team of organizers from the Symbiose association are pleased about the great enthusiasm and unanimous participation of all municipalities and “energy towns”. Also joining in are Vaduz Castle, the government district, Gutenberg Castle and the University of Liechtenstein.

The municipalities of Ruggell and Schellenberg are pioneers, as they never illuminate their municipal buildings at night and have thus declared the entire year to be “Earth Hour”. They are joined by the municipality of Planken, which also turns off its street lighting on every evening of the year.

A global symbol for united action
As a form of united action for Liechtenstein, the principality’s inhabitants are invited to participate in a cosy gathering by candlelight from 8 p.m. onwards at Peter-Kaiser-Platz in Vaduz on 23 March. Of course, anyone can participate in other public spaces or at home. In this way, everyone creates a symbol for a united future of greater environmental friendliness lasting well beyond 60 minutes.

After the Earth Hour is before the future

In addition, the Symbiose association extends a cordial invitation to participate in the Future Workshop. The Future Workshop is a communal initiative with the aim of turning dreams into action and to promoting a future-orientated community together. The next event in this series will be held in the SAL in Schaan on Saturday, 20 April 2013, from 5 p.m.
