Rendering work has a high status in contemporary construction, with rendered finishes today being produced primarily in a standard procedure as part of systems with exterior insulation. However, the material and aesthetic value of rendering extends well beyond its general practical application. In turning their attention to the diverse design possibilities of rendered finishes, a research team at ETH Zurich took up an issue that is a neglected area of architectural studies. The result of their work is a publication and exhibition that offer a taste of the impressive range of processes and techniques.

New and rediscovered techniques to touch and feel
A wide range of samples enables visitors to discover the diversity of rendering work. The rendered boards are displayed together with the tools used to create them, and provide information on the association between grain size, material thickness and application technique, presenting visitors with an overview of the characteristics of the individual materials and finishes. The samples of rendered finishes have various origins: contemporary examples – from Hild und K Architekten  from Munich and the Zurich offices EM2N and Romero & Schaefle Architekten  – as well as old, sometimes rediscovered techniques. The displayed samples come together to form the vivid and tactile “Über Putz” exhibition.

On its way through Switzerland, the travelling exhibition is also paying a visit to Liechtenstein. The vernissage will be held on Wednesday, 3 October 2012, at 5 p.m., in the foyer of the University of Liechtenstein. Pinar Gönül and Hartmut Göhler, joint publishers of the publication entitled Über Putz: Oberflächen entwickeln und realisieren (“On the surface: developing and realizing finishes”), will speak at the opening event. The exhibition can be visited weekdays from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. until 19 October 2012. Entry is free.
