As part of the Institute of Architecture and Planning’s series of lectures “From bamboo constructions to favelas” , on 31 October 2012 the Urban-Think Tank director and SLUM Lab  co-founder, Hubert Klumpner, will be speaking about his projects in Brazil and Venezuela.

Public lectures on architecture – about architectural creation and planning in Latin America – are taking place right up to 12 December 2012 at the University Liechtenstein. After the presentation by Mexican architect Mauricio Rocha about his creation in the 20-million metropolis of Mexico City, Hubert Klumpner, Professor for Architecture and Urban Development at ETH Zurich, is giving a lecture entitled “The good, the bad and the ugly”. Here he presents spectacular urban constructions in the slums of São Paulo and Caracas, which would be impossible to imagine in Europe.

Interdisciplinary approach for sustainable slum development
In 1998, Herbert Klumpner – together with Alfredo Brillembourg – took on the directorship of the Urban-Think Tank in Caracas. The philosophy of this interdisciplinary design studio is to develop solutions which are both innovative and practical, by working together with architects, civil engineers, environmental planners, landscape architects and communication specialists. This year, Alfredo Brillembourg and Herbert Klumpner were awarded the Global Holcim Awards Silver 2012 for a multifunctional public building in the Paraisópolis favela in São Paulo, Brazil. Since 2007 Hubert Klumpner has been a visiting professor at the Graduate School of Architecture, Planning and Preservation at Columbia University in the city of New York, where he co-founded the SLUM (Sustainable Living Urban Model) Lab . Furthermore, he gives lectures throughout the world at conferences such as at the GSD in Boston, Aedes in Berlin, UCV in Caracas or FAU in São Paulo.
