For the third time, the Institute of Architecture and Planning will be represented at the ArtDesign trade fair in Feldkirch, as students from the University of Liechtenstein present their work on the topic of recycling from 9 to 11 November 2012.

In the scope of the “Recycle – Reuse – Reshape” design studio by Professor Urs Meister and certified engineer Carmen Rist-Stadelmann , 15 students from the Bachelor’s degree programme in Architecture have been experimenting with discarded materials since the beginning of the 2012/2013 winter semester, recycling them into assemblages and so giving them a new lease of life. In addition to weight, structure and portability, the students also focused on the visual aspects of the objects. The resulting assemblages, as well as drawings and prints, will be exhibited at the ArtDesign trade fair in the event hall of the Landeskonservatorium for three days.

Searching for a place’s identity
During the next part of the winter semester, the studio will examine the disused Letten power station on the river Limmat in Zurich. A protected site of interest, its basic structure is to be preserved. For a semester, students at the University of Liechtenstein will uncover the location’s chequered history and come up with ideas for the future. In the first step, the recycling, students will analyse the existing structures and building materials to determine what can be utilized should the plant be rebuilt. In the second step, the reuse phase, they will focus on the integration of existing construction materials. Finally, during the reshape phase, suitable construction material from the urban site will form the basis for sustainable redesign.  At the end of the semester, the students’ results will be presented at an exhibition at the power station on the Limmat.

Focus on universities
In addition to the University of Liechtenstein, other universities will also be represented at this year’s ArtDesign with its “Focus on universities”. Among others, the Faculty for Design and Art at the Free University of Bozen will be presenting its “Vertigini” project, an oversized installation constructed from ladders. On the open-air area of the new Reichenfeld fairgrounds, ArtDesign’s visitors will also be able to take a look at the “Signaletik ganz persönlich” (personal way-finding) intervention by the Ravensburg School for Design.
