Each semester, a large-scale practical project is carried out in the scope of the Master’s degree programme in IT and Business Process Management at the University of Liechtenstein. In the 2013 summer semester, in cooperation with Hilti AG, innovative smartphone applications were developed and subsequently presented in June 2013.

In the Master’s degree programme in IT and Business Process Management, offered by the Institute of Information Systems, great emphasis is placed on the practical application of the learning content. Each semester, a practical project takes place in which the students focus on current topics, in some instances on behalf of regional companies. This semester, they were commissioned by Hilti AG to develop prototypes for smartphone applications which enable communication with Hilti products.

For the last 12 weeks, the students were heavily engaged with new technologies and applications such as smartphone apps, voice command, location-based services, near-field communication (NFC) and cloud computing, with the intention of optimizing all types of maintenance processes at Hilti. The prototypes developed were showcased during the final presentation on 13 June 2013.

Fully functional smartphone applications

The 26 students worked on one of two tasks while divided into six teams. The assignment consisted of developing prototypes of mobile smartphone applications for the entire value-creation process at Hilti. The total of six solutions presented showed different approaches: while certain applications were already programmed with voice command, other groups particularly focused on intuitive and user-friendly menu navigation. The work done by the students clearly exceeded the expectations with fully functional smartphone applications which employ the latest technologies, e.g. voice command and location services.

Module coordination assistant and project coordinator Stefan Debortoli was very impressed: “The students have really delivered a remarkable performance. On the one hand, they had to analyse Hilti’s processes and use new technologies to improve them. And on the other hand, the task of working in teams made up of a total of 12 nationalities is not always easy.”

At the end of the presentations, representatives from SAP and Hilti chose the winning team: Adela Calin, Simon Meier, Berat Menlikli, Alexandru Moldovan and Ninett Kossowsky with the “Hilti Firestop Mobile App”. The five students of the winning team were rewarded with an invitation to the SAP TechEd in Las Vegas, which, with a programme offering more than 1,000 hours of training, is the leading technical education conference in the field of SAP technologies.
