- CF_Action, Research, Environment & Art (Module/Course/Examination)
- In recent years we have witnessed an increase of alternative ways of creation, focusing on collaboration, exchange, and networking. Artists, architects, designers, and other disciplines are collaborating with/in everyday working environments. Economists, ecologists, and activists are together approaching environmental problem situations. Transdisciplinary and transversal activities are extending the scope of action. Creatives contribute significantly to find new solutions for complex problem situations.
How to work in and how to benefit from such transdisciplinary constellations and collaborations? This module offers insights into unorthodox working modes unfamiliar to many disciplines. It explores shared spaces as innovative hotspots, where collaborative knowledge production and problem solving will be experienced and debated.
The course consists of the following learning units.
A. Individual preparation and reading in advance: Student will get a reader with related texts and sources 2 weeks before the module starts.
B. Introduction to the field and its contextual and methodological constellations.
C. Learning units with experience-oriented and collaborative settings. Engaging in fields of action and related practices according to the following steps:
1. Cooperate/share (team building, envision a collaborative project, create a sphere of action)
2. Reflect/research (learning from each other)
3. Act/co-create/make it happen (establish and fund your project)- CF_Action, Research, Environment & Art (Seminar)
Was tun wir hier eigentlich?
- CF_Communication and Presentation Skills Training (Module/Course/Examination)
- Of paramount importance for every presentation is the personality of the presenter, which can create an atmosphere of trust and real interest.
In this elective course, students will learn how to enter a room with presence and charisma and make a convincing first impression. In addition, body language plays a very important part and, very often, is used only unconsciously.
With the help of feedback, students will improve their presentation skills, learn how to structure their presentations and use media.
Another important theme we will explore is personal "Status". Usually, "Status" is connected with a certain position or power, which someone enjoys in an organization or in society. However, in everyday life, we constantly play with our personal Status, which is somewhat independent from our professional Status. Everyone prefers a certain Status. To raise your own Status yields more authority and assertiveness. To lower your own Status, thereby increasing the Status of someone else, conveys empathy and sympathy. Both raising and lowering your own Status are important and useful in different situations. Students will learn their preferred status and how to change it, if necessary.
In this course, students will also work with the methods of improvisational theater to enhance their spontaneity, creativity and ability to deal with unknown situations.
- CF_Communication: Diplomacy for Success (Module/Course/Examination)
- Whether in business, management, society, or politics, it seems at times that we are surrounded by battle lines, waging price wars, detecting threats, forming alliances, and aiming to conquer the market.
- However, destructive interaction wastes resources and only yields losers in the end. Diplomats can show the way down different path. With clear messages, elegant expression, and consideration for the 'human factor', they understand how to advocate their views, to break deadlock in negotiations, to take the sting out of bad news, and to focus on human crisis management when relationships hang in the balance.
- In this course you learn how to uphold legitimate concerns in a way that can also benefit the other party, allowing people to save face if concessions have to be made. The business world is a marketplace where negotiations for the common good should always be fair and on equal terms, even if they are extremely difficult and often harsh.
- 'Trust' as a key instrument in diplomatic leadership competence and essential pillar, particularly in difficult times
- Tips and tricks of the trade
- CF_Doing the Right Thing: On Practical Ethics (Lecture) (Module)
- Philosophy is often and mistakenly taken as a discipline that has no relation to the real world. This course, centered around ethics in general, and practical ethics in particular, aims at deconstructing this false view about philosophy.
For practical ethics is the area of ethics that tries to analyze specific, concrete and controversial moral issues in order to provide the best (right?) answers. Indeed, as human beings, we are often confronted with real-life situations which require ethical analysis and orientation. For example:- Should animals be used for medical purpose?
- Should one's privacy be violated for safety or security reasons?
- Should some live wealthy while others die of hunger?
- Should a citizen, even in a democratic setting, disregard his obligations towards the state?
- CF_Environmental Psychology and Decisions: Application to Green Architecture & Urban Greening (Module/Course/Examination)
- The course conveys psychological theories, methods and knowledge in the context of environmental issues. Behavioral and conceptual decision-making is considered from different perspectives (e.g. psychology, game theory) and in different contexts.
The course is structured by focusing decision making on ascending levels of human regulatory systems:
1. Individual-level models (psychological theories and modeling, communication and public campaigns, leisure activities, green infrastructure and green spaces and health and well-being, waste disposal and recycling behavior)
2. Group level models (psychological theories and modeling, group think phenomena, group techniques, decision process analyses)
3. Community-level approaches (Collective Action Theory)
Theories are presented in application oriented contexts focusing for example waste disposal and recycling, sustainable food consumption or green infrastructure and urban green-space use and planning. Solution oriented approaches towards influencing environmental behavior (environmental education, communication, campaigns) and improving group processes (Groupthink phenomena, Group Techniques) and collective action shall complement theoretical parts aiming at explaining and modeling behavior and decisions. As own contribution students shall autonomously apply the conveyed knowledge in small projects conducted in groups or present scientific literature centered round the course topics in student lectures finishing the course.
- CF_Fundamentals of Philosophy (Module/Course/Examination)
- As a short introduction to philosophy, this seminar takes up mainly four issues:
- The nature of philosophy: what is philosophy? What are its objects of investigation? What are its methods? What makes philosophy relevant?
- The nature of morality: how should we live? Why do we need ethics?
- The nature of art: What is art? What is an artwork? How do we evaluate artworks? Are moral standards relevant for art?
- The nature of knowledge and critical thinking: how can we know something? How can we formulate logical and coherent positions? What is critical thinking and how can we train it?
This seminar will be an opportunity to introduce and discuss major philosophical positions and theories in the areas of ethics, aesthetics, epistemology, and critical thinking. Using practical examples from concrete life-situations, we'll establish the link between theory and practice and show the relevance of philosophy.- CF_Fundamentals of Philosophy (Seminar) Gueye
- CF_Happiness. An introduction to positive Psychology (Module/Course/Examination)

- CF_Know yourself - be successful (Module/Course/Examination)
- Life shows that on the long-run personality makes the difference to be successful both in business and in your private life. That is why having a better understanding about yourself and managing your personal resources mindfully is crucial. In this module, we focus on the three elements Personality & Self Awareness, Mindset, and Body Resources. By doing so, we enable you with knowledge, and self-experience to high perform on the long run.
The Liechtenstein Academy Foundation elaborated a unique offer together with external lecturers that cover the following main topics:
1) Personality & Self-Awareness: At the very start of the self-awareness journey, we start with an Insights Discovery Profile that helps you to understand your preferences, strengths and the value they bring to you and your surroundings.
2) Purpose & Mindset: Why is purpose and mindset so crucial for success in professional and personal life?
3) Body Resources: Are you aware of the power that lays within a conscious management of your body resources?- CF_Know yourself - be successful (Seminar) Winder, Mäder, Frey
- CF_Mapping modern media (Module/Course/Examination)
- Everybody is talking about the media. The word is that traditional mass media are dying out while new digital media are about to revolutionize modern society. But what are "the media"? Instead of reviewing what media scholars wrote on this question, we will try to give answers by inquiring into our everyday life: What do you personally regard as a media experience? Who or what plays a role in this course of action? How are these human and non-human actors connected with each other? To which demand is the media experience responding? And what might an alternative response be? By closely describing and mapping events in their daily lives, the students will not only get to know main concepts of actor-network theory, but also develop creative skills along the lines of critical cartography.

- FU_MILSA (Auslandsaufenthalt im SS 20) (Module/Course/Examination)
- The MILSA mentoring program provides students with the opportunity to develop their intercultural awareness and intercultural learning as students and future professionals. The program is offered twice yearly with a duration of approx. twelve months. It starts in April respectively in October.
The mentoring program provides an immersive intercultural learning experience in an international location. Students' learning is supported by pre-departure and post-sojourn workshops, and by Skype interviews and guided blog writing during the study abroad. The mentor is a staff member of the International Office (not academic staff or other students).
The pre-departure workshop introduces students to explore aspects of intercultural learning and helps them prepare for their experience in a different society and culture.
During the stay abroad, students will talk to the mentor via Skype and write guided blog contributions about their intercultural learning. They stay in contact and complete group task together. Upon their return, students meet with the mentor in a post-sojourn workshop to discuss and reflect upon their experiences and the importance of their intercultural learning for their future professional lives.
The subject includes content on notions of culture, interculturality, intercultural learning,
stereotypes, identities, cultural practices, and reflection and reflective writing.
The First Steps in Intercultural Learning Workshop is held before students depart. This workshop provides essential content, discussion and activities to prepare students for their intercultural learning, international experience and to guide their completion of assessment tasks.
The Coming Home Workshop takes place after students return from their stay abroad and allows them to reflect on their experience, particularly their intercultural learning and its
application to their future professional lives. Students also present their group assignment.- FU_MILSA (Auslandsaufenthalt im SS 20) (Miscellaneous) Ackermann
- CF_LService Learning (Module/Course/Examination)
- CF_Service Learning (Seminar) Banzer
- CF_Technology and Society – Understanding the Cultural Dimension of Artifact (Module/Course/Examination)
- The seminar investigates the intertwinings of technology and society. Technology is a cross-sectional dimension of our life world and a catalyzer of socio-cultural change. For example, IT and containerization enable more efficent workflows and supply chains. However, the powerful story of technological progress (i.e., technological determinism) has to be challenged: A sociological/anthropological perspective on technology and technological change emphasizes that technology is (hertofore) invented by individuals within society and thus developed according to social norms. The course aims at broadening the understanding of how technology is socially constructed, e.g., in the realm of work and in our everyday life in general. We will read select key literature (theory, case studies) from the disciplines of cultural anthropology, history and sociology of technology.
