Augmented Reality & the Internet of Things in the Construction Industry

The Competition
Every year Hilti organizes an IT competition to help solve some of the industry’s most pressing problems. Students and graduates from all over the world join the competition to both prove themselves and to kick-start their careers. If you are interested in the topics of Internet of Things and Augmented Reality, then this year’s competition is for you!

Augmented Reality and IoT in the Construction Industry
As digitization capabilities extend, virtually every aspect of life is captured and stored in some digital form, and we move closer towards the networked interconnection of everyday objects. The impact of this is a real-time global exchange of information between multiple connected devices.

Hilti provides premium products, systems and services to construction professionals. The company regularly sets the standard in construction and building maintenance industries by developing and providing innovative solutions and internationally-renowned products. Hilti customers interact through multiple channels and irrespective of time, place, device or medium. The key objective is to drive consumer acquisition, retention and loyalty through services.

Internet of Things play a vital role in supporting employee productivity and customer service. For customers, the user-centric Hilti IT solutions aim to provide a platform for simple, immediate access to on-the-spot information on Hilti products and services. 2017 was an interesting year in many ways. It was an inflection point where IoT, Cloud and AI started to converge together to lay the foundation for new set of business applications. One of the most interesting development where this convergence comes together is the field of Augmented Reality(AR).

Augmented Reality has many potential applications in the construction industry. For example, the application of computer vision and object recognition adds various layers of information and interaction to the real world. Augmented reality on mobile devices can also place 3D design models onto existing space. The applications are limitless and can serve to assist engineers and architects in the jobsite.

You are required to:
Design and develop an AR and/or IoT solution that supports and enhances Hilti products and services for the construction industry.
