Coronavirus COVID-19 - Measures and activities

The changes in teaching due to the Corona pandemic make it as well necessary to adapt the assessment of modules and courses to the current situation.

The Rectorate has decided that the procedure for examinations is as follows.

Lecture examinations

The lecture exams planned in the upcoming weeks (including re-examinations) will be postponed until further notice. A solution is currently being worked on, so that these exams can be taken in May at the latest. The new dates will of course be communicated enough in advance. The same applies to the final exams.

Courses involving coursework

The assessment of courses involving coursework can continue to be carried out continuously and, if necessary, adapted to the needs or specifics of the respective course. Lecturers can use alternative forms of exams such as online video exams or homework assignments, term- and seminar papers (or others) and thus replace the planned assessment. Care is taken to ensure that communication takes place at an early stage. Work is currently underway to implement a technical solution. It will probably be available in two weeks.

Module examinations

In the area of module examinations in accordance with the study and examination regulations for architecture and continuing education, the procedure to be followed is the same as the one set out above (lecture examinations, courses involving coursework). Due to differing discipline-specific needs in the area of architecture, there may be variations, which are communicated accordingly by the lecturers or the responsible persons for the study programme.

Bachelor's and Master's Thesis

The bachelor’s and master’s thesis can of course be prepared and submitted as before. A solution is currently being worked on for the final public presentation and defense. In connection with the preparation of the theses, please also pay attention to the information on the infrastructure (library).

We are also working on a solution with regard to the planned exams at the end of the summer semester. Timely information will also be provided in this regard.

We ask everyone involved for a little patience and at the same time would like to thank all members of the university for their understanding, support and cooperation during these challenging times.

Update 16.3.2020

On Monday, 16 March 2020, the Government of the Principality of Liechtenstein adopted further measures to limit the corona pandemic. These include the prohibition of all events with more than five persons until 30 April 2020. Accordingly and in accordance with the suspension of teaching until the end of the summer semester, the University of Liechtenstein extends the cancellation or postponement of courses until 30 May 2020. 


Update 13.3.2020

The Government of the Principality of Liechtenstein has just decided to close all educational institutions in the country from Monday, 16 March 2020 until Easter.

This means that the University of Liechtenstein will not only - as already communicated - discontinue the courses in consecutive teaching on campus, but will also probably stop teaching in continuing education until the end of lectures in the summer semester. Starting Monday, 23 March 2020, teaching will be virtualized step by step, as far as possible through online platforms.

We would ask all those involved to be patient in making the digital teaching platforms available. Please also consider providing written study material in the form of eBooks or annotated slides. At the same time, we will do our utmost to ensure the academic success of our students.

Information for all employees as to who will be working from home from Monday, 16 March 2020 and who will be working on campus as a member of the support team will be provided by their respective superiors. Further details on time recording, work tools, etc. will be provided by the Human Resources Department from next week.

  • week 12: Mon, Tue, Wed open from 9:00 to 14:00; Thu-Sa closed
  • From week 13: Mon to Fri from 9:00 to 12:00, Sat always closed

During the opening hours media lending is possible in the library. You can return the media at any time via the return box. The standing terminal with research station and for self-lending is available for use in the library. The reading room with seating is closed from Monday, 16.3.2020.

Update 12.3.2020

The situation surrounding the spread of the coronavirus is developing rapidly: The University of Liechtenstein has communicated internally and externally that the teaching activities in continuing education will be maintained for the time being. In the meantime, however, it is the case that some participants and lecturers are no longer able or allowed to participate in the courses. As a result, in some programmes it is no longer possible to provide high quality training.

For this reason, depending on the situation, modules or courses in continuing education may be cancelled or postponed. The respective programme managers make decisions for the protection of all participants and communicate directly to the participants and lecturers in the event of cancellations.

The start of the certificate course in IT and data protection law is postponed to October 2020.


Update 11.3.2020

The Rectorate of the University of Liechtenstein has established a task force "Corona". This group meets regularly. It takes current developments into account and coordinates the measures taken with the recommendations of the Office of Public Health and the Federal Office of Public Health of Switzerland (FOPH). In addition, the task force is guided by the recommendations and measures of the Swiss universities and the German-speaking university area.

University of Liechtenstein restricts teaching activities

The University of Liechtenstein is severely restricting its teaching activities on campus:

As of Monday, 16 March 2020, there will be no lectures on campus in the consecutive programs in economics (Bachelor's degree programme in Business Administration, Master's degree programs in Entrepreneurship and Management, Finance, and Information Systems), probably until the end of the lecture period of the summer semester 2020. Should the situation calm down earlier, the University of Liechtenstein will of course return to normal operations. Beginning on Monday, 23 March 2020, a step-by-step virtualization of consecutive teaching will be implemented as far as possible through online platforms. The details are currently being worked out by the "Corona" task force together with the persons responsible for the study programs. Students and lecturers will be informed about this in the coming days by their respective programme managers (online platforms, access data, teaching procedures, etc.)

For students and lecturers of the Bachelor's and Master's degree programs in Architecture, models for reducing attendance times on campus will also be developed and information will be provided directly by the program managers.

The University of Liechtenstein aims to ensure that students do not suffer any disadvantages in the course of their studies despite the special circumstances.

Teaching activities in continuing education will be maintained until further notice.

Research activities will be continued. The operation of the library and the cafeteria are still being clarified.

A large part of the staff of the University of Liechtenstein will increasingly work from home as of Monday next week. The basis for this will be either existing home office agreements or solutions set up at short notice (loan notebooks, Citrix on private devices). In the coming days, division-specific information will also be provided by the respective superiors.

University internal meetings, e.g. commissions, can be held if necessary, but online meetings are preferable.


The Federal Office of Public Health (FOPH) in Switzerland has now abandoned a definition of "affected areas". In view of current developments, the delimitation no longer appears to make sense, which is why the previously applicable regulations of the University of Liechtenstein regarding risk areas have been repealed.

Business trips abroad by students, lecturers and employees (e.g. study trips, participation in congresses, meetings) beyond the commuting distance are not permitted for the time being. Furthermore, no business travel bookings are currently permitted until the Rectorate communicates the lifting of this restriction.

We strongly advise against private travel abroad beyond one's own commute to and from work. Students, lecturers and staff members who nevertheless have to travel abroad for urgent personal reasons are requested to contact the Rectorate in advance with their contact details. This is because the areas concerned are constantly changing and, if necessary, a rapid traceability of contacts should be guaranteed.

Cost consequences for trip cancellations

In the case of business trips that have already been booked and are no longer possible due to the University of Liechtenstein's current regulations, the University will cover the cancellation costs (transport, accommodation, participation fees, etc.). The organizers of the trips are requested to check whether the cancellation costs are covered by the pandemic insurance when booking by credit card.

The Rectorate is currently examining the possibility of covering cancellation costs for study trips for students if the trips are part of the curriculum.


In accordance with the recommendations of the Office of Public Health in Liechtenstein and the Federal Office of Public Health (FOPH) of Switzerland, as well as the practice of universities in the German-speaking area of higher education, the University of Liechtenstein will cancel or postpone all campus events up to and including April 13, 2020. This includes the diploma celebration, information events for prospective students, the children's university and the inauguration ceremony.

Collection of questions and answers

In this critical phase, the Rectorate is aware that a high degree of flexibility is required from all members of the university and that not every detailed question can be answered off the cuff. In the interest of transparency and to ensure that all parties involved are informed quickly, the Rectorate asks that any questions concerning coronavirus continue to be sent to health@uni.li so that a list of frequently asked questions and corresponding answers can be compiled. These questions and answers will be made available at www.uni.li/corona.
