ROMANIA - BUCHAREST

Embarking on a semester abroad opens the door to new cultures, lifestyles, and perspectives. My experience in Bucharest, Romania, was no exception. At first, I was confronted with unfamiliar traditions and practices. However, as time passed, I found myself adjusting to and embracing the unique aspects of life in this vibrant city.

One of the striking features of Bucharest were the thriving shops and stores. Unlike my hometown in Vorarlberg, Austria, where stores close early, Bucharest's shops remained open until 11:00 PM, even on Sundays. This exciting difference showed me that the city was all about making things easy, encouraging people to go out and explore shops, markets, and cafes even late at night. This added a vibrant and energetic feeling to the city.

Another thing that became familiar during my time abroad was Bucharest's well-established transportation network. The efficient metro and tram systems connected the city seamlessly, highlighting the significance of sustainability and accessibility. Due to heavy traffic in Bucharest, the public transportation system is crucial and highly effective.

Living in a metropolis was an entirely new experience that I first needed to become acquainted with. The density of Bucharest's urban infrastructure differed from the peaceful landscapes of my hometown. The towering buildings, bustling streets, and vibrant neighborhoods highlighted the city's urban character. This separation between the urban environment and the natural beauty of my homeland allowed me to appreciate the diverse facets of life and architecture in Bucharest.

Enrolling in a Bucharest university was an eye-opening experience, especially when it came to the educational system. The division of classes and the classroom-centered approach aligned more with the structure of a technical college (Fachhochschule). This approach encouraged active participation, practical learning, and an emphasis on real-world skills.

Among the most significant aspects of my receiving university were partner projects. Working together closely with peers from diverse backgrounds resulted into an enriching exchange of ideas. This spirit of collaboration, coupled with competition, encouraged me to embrace new perspectives, improve teamwork skills, and present ideas confidently.

Among the various examples I've mentioned that initially seemed unfamiliar, there was one aspect that was completely new to me in its entirety.

Arriving in Bucharest for my semester abroad, the idea of living alone in a foreign land stirred both excitement and anxiety. Navigating unfamiliar streets, managing daily routines, and confronting solitude seemed like difficult challenges. However, over time, this journey reshaped my perspective, turning the unknown into comfort.

In the beginning, the solitude felt like a constant companion, reminding me of the distance from my friends and family back home. Also, the language barrier and cultural differences further intensified my feelings of isolation. Simple tasks like grocery shopping or asking for directions became complex missions. But with each passing day, I began to see these challenges as opportunities to grow.

Slowly but steadily, the once unfamiliar streets of Bucharest started feeling like home. I navigated through the maze-like alleys with a growing sense of confidence, discovering hidden gems that weren't on the tourist maps. The local shopkeepers, initially strangers, became familiar faces that greeted me warmly.

Living alone also gave me the freedom to create my own routines and rhythms. Solitude transformed from a daunting presence to a appreciated opportunity for self-discovery and reflection. The quiet moments allowed me to dive into my studies, get to know the local culture, and appreciate the beauty of everyday life.

Looking back on my semester abroad in Bucharest, I am grateful for the transformational journey I undertook. Living alone in a foreign land taught me that the unfamiliar can indeed become familiar when we approach it with an open heart and a willingness to adapt. The solitude that once seemed daunting now feels like a trusted companion, reminding me of the incredible growth that can emerge from embracing the unknown.
