The Independent Study offers a small and focused contribution to the Systematic Sustainability Catalogue (SSC) of the Unit Sustainable Design.The SSC is a research instrument. lt compares theoretical texts, sustainability frameworks, standards, certification systems and local case studies in order to understand how sustainability is defined, measured, narrowed or expanded. Each student works on one precise question. Possible topics include a selected source, one standard or certification system, one needs-based theme, one under-addressed field, or one local case study in the Alpine Rhine Valley. The aim is concentration: to read carefully, compare critically and make one relevant aspect of sustainability clearer. The output may take the form of an annotated source dossier, a comparative matrix, a short written reftection, a coding sheet or a visual research map. The Independent Study may support OPS! as a studio context. The distinction remains clear: SSC is research; OPS! is the design studio informed by this research.

Throughout the seminar, students may engage with different projects and partners, such as the Denkraum at the University of Liechtenstein (an innovative clay-wood structure designed, planned, and built on campus in collaboration with local craftspeople and experts from various disciplines), the Gabera Foundation, a non-profit organization in Niger currently developing an earthen campus focused on sustainable education and community-oriented development or the FFG research project Missing Link, which aims to establish guidelines defining the legal, economic, logistical, and infrastructural requirements for regional earth construction systems, including a clear process and supply chain from material extraction to installation. The earth HUB promotes innovative building approaches and interdisciplinary exchange, with a particular emphasis on earth construction as a model for ecological and social sustainability. By connecting regional and international stakeholders, researchers, and students, the platform supports the development of practical solutions alongside scientifically grounded knowledge. It highlights exemplary projects, fosters collaboration between the University of Liechtenstein (LSA) and its partners, and explores the potential of renewable building materials, particularly the combination of earth and wood. The seminar Material Ecology focuses on providing a deep understanding of the selection, use and impact of building materials on the environment and indoor climate. This subject area that aims to promote sustainable and environmentally- friendly practices in the construction sector. As part of the seminar, students learn about various aspects of material ecology in the field of architecture. These include sustainable materials, life cycle analysis, energy saving and thermal insulation, waste and recycling management and ecological certification systems.

This module, optionally to be undertaken in the third semester, serves as a basis for an individual Master’s Thesis, if successfully completed with a minimum grade of 5.0. The sustainable operation within a self-chosen area is critically analysed and applied. It contains a research question, an in-depth theoretical investigation as well as a conceptual outline for a Theoretical Report and a Technical Report. In the Preliminary Study the supervision consists of directing the preparation of the thesis proposal and the research design as well as the development of the student’s clear conceptual position. The Preliminary Study needs to be completed at the University of Liechtenstein and is reviewed before a panel of experts of the related research unit.

The Professional Practice gives students the opportunity to work in an architectural office or related fields to gain new practical experience in different stages from design studies, competition entries and construction projects up to the on-site building process. The Professional Practice is planned and set up by the students, under the guidance of mentors. Thereby students learn to apply for a new job. They prepare a professional portfolio and document their learnings during the professional practice. Those who already work in an architecture office or in related fields can also complete the Professional Practice module but must arrange a work situation that allows them to gain experience in a new field within their employment for the required duration. The experiences and insights gained during the Professional Practice are presented at the University of Liechtenstein and reviewed in front of the mentors.

Liechtenstein's Georg Malin (born 1926) is a true Homo Universalis: sculptor, painter, graphic artist, historian, museum director, archaeologist, lecturer, and politician. In the centenary year of his birth, this individual elective explores the many facets of his work and legacy.

Possible approaches include Malin's sculptural work in relation to Minimal Art, his sacred collaborations from the 1960s onwards in Liechtenstein, Switzerland, and Vorarlberg, as well as his graphic work, stamp designs, and political activities as member of the Landtag (1966-1974) and Minister for the Environment and Culture (1974-1978).
Through his exhibitions, excavations, and work as conservator of the Liechtenstein State Art Collection, Malin shaped the country's cultural and museum landscape. The research semester offers a kaleidoscopic overview of his diverse contribution to Liechtenstein's cultural heritage.

Die Umnutzung des prominenten Post- und Verwaltungsgebäudes zum neuen Sitz der Liechtensteinischen Landesbibliothek ist ein Politikum. Das Individual Elective «Posthum» nimmt dies zum Anlass, den zwischen 1973 und 1975 von Franz Marok errichteten Bau in seiner ursprünglichen Kubatur, Konstruktion und Gestaltung kritisch zu untersuchen. Als funktionale, urbane Grossarchitektur zählt er zu den wenigen Beispielen des Brutalismus in Liechtenstein und steht zugleich für die damalige Idee der «autogerechten Stadt» mit Verkehrstrennung und Grossgaragen.

Mit dem Umbau zur Bibliothek wird die bestehende Fassade weichen müssen. Parallel dazu entsteht in Schaan ein genossenschaftlicher Neubau, für den eine nachhaltige und kostengünstige Fassadenlösung gesucht wird. Ziel des Individual Electives ist daher die Analyse, Bewertung und internationale Einordnung des Postgebäudes sowie eine vertiefte technische Untersuchung seiner Fassade. Darauf aufbauend werden gestalterische und konstruktive Lösungsansätze für eine neue Fassade aus alten Teilen entwickelt - als reale Bauaufgabe in Liechtenstein.

Alongside established methods like timber framing, panel, and log construction, small timber building bricks open new perspectives for material-appropriate, demountable, reusable, and resource-efficient construction.

Modular block systems in solid timber, fibre-based or hybrid variants have appeared in numerous applications and patents, and are now being rediscovered amid sustainability debates - yet remain understudied. Through examples, we examine how prefabricated wooden modules have historically enabled assembly, disassembly, and reassembly with minimal material loss and labor.

Throughout history, material shortages often led to creative and circular building solutions. In the 16th century, French architect Philibert de l'Orme developed the "a petit bois" method, constructing large roofs from small timber elements. His work focused on adapting and building upon what existed. Using the roof truss of the Caserne Rochambeau in Mont-Dauphin (F) as a case study, we explore whether this might be one of the earliest examples of circular construction thinking.

The Research Semester offers a deeper research contribution to the Systematic Sustainability Catalogue (SSC) of the Unit Sustainable Design. The SSC investigates how sustainability is defined, structured and made measurable through theory, policy frameworks, standards, certification systems and local practices. lt asks which dimensions of sustainable transformation are already weil established, and which remain under-addressed, weakly institutionalised or spatially unresolved. Participants develop an individual research project within the SSC framework. Possible topics include ethical and anthropological foundations of sustainability, comparative analysis of SIA, EN and ISO standards, certification systems, food and health, commons and care, material culture, repair, education, work, or local transformation fields in the Alpine Rhine Valley. The expected output is a structured research contribution: an expanded bibliography, a coding protocol, a comparative matrix, an indicator proposal, a thematic dossier or a territorial research map. The Research Semester is not a studio project. lt may inform OPS! as a spatial testing ground, but it remains research. The distinction is essential: SSC provides the research framework; OPS! translates selected questions into design.

Tectonics relates building methods from construction in wood, brick, stone or concrete to theoretical approaches of Schinkel, Semper, Viollet-le-Duc or Choisy and reflects upon the relation of form, structure and construction. Built examples serve to record the material laws that determine the construction and illuminates these at various levels of scale. The conceptually and constructively formulated detail, which essentially describes the character of a building, is the focus of the tectonic investigations. This research on iconic buildings is undertaken in axonometric drawings that allow to explain the specific tectonic approach.

In this seminar, key topics of high relevance to contemporary urban design are discussed. These are approached in a transdisciplinary manner and embedded in a holistic view. Based on the principles of decarbonisation, adaptation to climate change, the fostering of biodiversity and an inclusive and equitable distribution of space, urban
design is understood as a key to the spatial discourse. Over the course of the semester, students will engage intensively with a selected topic and develop their own position on it using theoretical texts and case studies from practice.

Usually, students attend workshops of 5 to 10 days and develop projects in groups. Presentations are reviewed by the workshop tutors.

As part of the three-year Erasmus+ programme 'Crafting Clay - Exploring circularity with local earth', we are taking an in-depth look at clay as a building material and exploring various clay techniques in different countries. The first workshop took place in Liechtenstein in 2025, where we designed and built the Red Pavilion using clay as a filling material in a half-timbered structure. The second workshop took place 2026 in the Netherlands, where we constructed an herb hause using compressed clay blocks.

The third and last workshop in the Crafting Clay program will take place in Trondheim (NO) and will be coordinated by the NTNU. The aim of this workshop is to design and build a rammed earth element in Nyhavna - an industrial area in Trondheim that is set to be transformed into a vibrant neighbourhood combining culture, housing and urban life. Each student group will produce and design their own unique clay element, experimenting with surface textures, aggregates, formwork, structural expressions and the overall composition. At the end of the workshop, all the elements will be assembled into a wall. The idea is to create two walls that serve as room dividers in a large industrial hall, with openings that allow for flexible use of space and the entry of natural light. Students from the Academie van Bouwkunst, NTNU Trondheim and KU Leuven will participate in this Design Build Workshop. Eight students from the University of Liechtenstein can participate in the workshop and will receive financial travel support from the EU.

Under the title “SocioEcoHoods – Teaching for the Socio-Ecological Transformation of Neighborhoods: An Interand Transdisciplinary Approach”, and as part of the Erasmus+ project, the University of Münster (DE), in cooperation with the Liechtenstein School of Architecture at the University of Liechtenstein (LI), the Bergen School of Architecture (NO), and the University of Genoa (IT), is planning a series of diverse student workshops at each partner university.

The Erasmus+ project “SocioEcoHoods” aims to promote shared values, civic engagement, and participation by fostering inter- and transdisciplinary learning focused on sustainable neighborhood development. In alignment with the EU Leipzig Charter and the New European Bauhaus Compass, it emphasizes innovative teaching formats across diverse urban contexts to stimulate collaboration among students, researchers, and local stakeholders. The initiative seeks to strengthen participatory practices and support sustainable urban transformation in line with European policy objectives. Each project partner will lead a work package that integrates research and teaching. The project will culminate in an international conference designed to facilitate knowledge exchange and critical reflection. Expected outcomes include innovative neighborhood development concepts, tailored tools for participatory planning, and enhanced inter- and transdisciplinary teaching practices. Ultimately, the project aims to generate lasting educational and societal impact by empowering learners and strengthening local planning capacities.

This hackathon runs for five days and brings together students, researchers, and local stakeholders to actively explore and reimagine the ongoing transformation of Genova Prà: a neighborhood shaped by decades of urban change and future challenges. Through fieldwork, site visits, participatory mapping, design experimentation, and direct engagement with local communities, participants will tackle real-world issues in an intensive, collaborative environment. Working in interdisciplinary teams (architects, engineers, geographers, and more), they will develop policy briefs focused on urban regeneration. Key themes include: urban circularity, energy transition, tourism, and sea–mountain landscape connections. The hackathon fosters knowledge co-production across public, private, academic, and civic sectors, encouraging open dialogue and hands-on collaboration. Students will co-design proposals that address environmental sustainability, social inclusion, and spatial quality, while critically reflecting on the role of universities in driving urban transformation. The experience will culminate in a final presentation to the hackathon’s steering committee, followed by a public exhibition and participatory evaluation process. During this closing phase, outcomes will be shared with the local community and stakeholders, creating a platform to discuss results, explore future development scenarios for the neighborhood, and gather feedback and levels of consensus on the proposed strategies. By integrating servicelearning into a fastpaced, actionoriented format, the initiative empowers participants to move beyond theory and engage directly with complex societal challenges. More than a hackathon, this is a space for experimentation, exchange, and co-design.
