In winter semester 2016/17, we deal with the issue of cultural identities. As preparation and discussion in the design studios, three lectures illuminate the many facets of this phenomenon. The topic will be elaborated on not only from the perspective of architects and spatial planners, but will also be expanded by cultural studies, curatorial, historical, artistic and sociological perspectives. Through the discussion of specific places on our doorstep as well as with abstract spaces in our global world, the lecturers scrutinize our thinking, designing and our fields of activity as architects and spatial planners.

Michael Schindhelm, born 1960, based in Lugano and London, grew up in the former GDR and graduated with a Master degree in quantum chemistry in Voronezh (Soviet Union). Until 1990 Michael Schindhelm worked as translator, author, and drama advisor. After four years as theatre director in Gera, in 1996 he was appointed Director of the Theater Basel, performing opera, drama, and ballet. In 2004 he became Director General of the Opernstiftung Berlin comprising Berlin’s three opera houses. In 2007 Michael Schindhelm was appointed Cultural Director of the Dubai Culture and Arts Authority. He left Dubai in 2009 and started acting as cultural advisor to public organizations in Asia and Europe: as a professor for the subject of public space at Strelka Institute in Moscow, as a consultant of Rem Koolhaas’ architectural office, and, since 2012, as an advisor for international affairs at Zurich University of the Arts. Michael Schindhelm continues to work as novelist, librettist and film documentarist.
