Curricula

Master's degree programme in Architecture (01.09.2008)

Description

Looking at the cultural and socioeconomic context in which architects operate, case studies will go beyond built products and situate theoretical concepts in their time. The course is premised on texts and designs of architects from the last third of the 20th century. Lectures, analysis and active participation in discussions are integral to the class.

Lecture Goals

What is the discourse of architecture? Why do certain periods give particular relevance to discourse, and why are there ‚theory heavy’ periods? We will look at the work of certain figures who, facing criticism and professional controversy, positioned themselves at the crossroads of theory and practise. We will see how their discourse was conditioned by historic dynamics and by the publics of architecture. These dynamics will be compared with the context of practice today.

Learning Outcomes

The interaction of writing and design allows us to see how architects reflect their own discipline. Students learn to assess the intellectual environment of built and written ideas. The question of disciplinary boundaries and, in particular, of autonomy will be discussed as a key aspect of architecture history. Issues raised in this class will also contribute to students’ understanding of the background of contemporary architecture production.
