Abstract

Cross-border wealth management is an important topic globally, and particularly relevant in Europe. There is not much literature on drivers of and barriers to this phenomenon. This present article closes this gap and analyzes the economic, legal, and tax drivers of cross-border wealth management as well as barriers, which are predominantly of a legal and regulatory nature. This is complemented by a discussion of global developments which impact cross-border wealth management. These include recent developments in tax harmonization and tax transparency and a number of economic and political risks. The presentation includes examples from Liechtenstein, Switzerland, Austria, and Germany.
