Publicly accessible "in-between" spaces within the urban landscape of Liechtenstein

Project Description

Like many European regions, the Alpine Rhine Valley is characterized by a heterogeneous mix of settlement areas, transport infrastructure, settlement-related open spaces, agricultural areas, and open landscape structures. The planning science tries to grasp this phenomenon of urbanization by different terms: agglomeration, urban landscape, urban area, intermediate city, sprawl town, etc.
The subject of this project is the undeveloped, publicly accessible "in-between" spaces within the urban landscape of Liechtenstein. The research project examines these on two different levels: (1) Everyday landscapes: In-between spaces are examined from the perspective of perception and use. (2) Conceptual landscapes: In-between spaces are viewed from the rational perspective of planning, systematizing, and controlling. The hypothesis is that there is little aesthetic attention for these in-between spaces in science, planning policy, and practice. The following three research questions are examined:
(1) Which types of everyday in-between spaces are there in Liechtenstein?
(2) How are the in-between spaces of Liechtenstein perceived and used by various actors in their daily life, for economic and agricultural use, in the planning policy, for nature conservation, etc.?
(3) How can the perception-oriented perspective of everyday landscapes be brought into institutionalized processes of conceptual landscapes?
