Project Description
The Advanced Studio - Sustainable Design concentrates on the design of complex building projects in which the deficits for our society in the future are revealed through in-depth analyses. With the aim of achieving a sustainably good quality of life for individuals and humanity, we use a framework of five pairs of needs: resources and energy, space and mobility, food and health, demography and integration as well as values and ethics. These replace the familiar scale categories of common architectural theory and thus overcome the linear functionalism. Not unexpectedly, utopian, dystopian, but also very humble and reflective projects can result.
Teaching Method
Guided project work in the design studio. A seminar week focussing on the studio topic is an integral part of the design studio.

Professional Competence
  • understand the comprehensive topics of sustainable building, in particular the careful and high-quality use of raw materials, space and reflection on social and ethical issues.
  • demonstrate initial design skills in order to explore ideas and concepts using different media and present them in an understandable way.
  • carry out the tasks set under supervision and demonstrate personal effectiveness in their realisation.
  • develop an architectural idea into a sustainable proposal, carefully taking into consideration the project’s historical, theoretical, environmental (ecological), cultural, economic and social context.
  • apply the basic knowledge acquired through integrations in design, build up their design process with a range of media, the computer and a process-oriented modelling technique and present it comprehensibly in relation to the task.
  • deepen their knowledge of a sub-area of a topic from the field of sustainable building.
  • deal with complex ethical and professional issues.
  • establish connections to other disciplines in the field of sustainable architecture.
Methodological Competence
  • develop and evaluate advanced design and organising principles.
  • formulate complex ideas and concepts under guidance and to generate and further develop space-creating solutions based on these.
  • carry out literature research, evaluate collected information and link it with their own project work.
  • communicate the complexity of their own project work convincingly using plans, models and various media as well as in oral and written form.
Social Competence
  • work creatively and effectively in groups on the same task.
  • justify, argue and defend their own point of view in the context of the group and the topic.

  • argue and defend a reflected ethical stance and personal values in the context of the climate emergency.

Assessment Methods
Minimum 75% compulsory attendance, continuous assessment, midterm and final reviews.
The final grade is calculated according to the weighting of the following components: design project (80%) and final presentation (20%).
