Project Description
The Advanced Studio - Built Heritage & Circularity focuses on design, based on the principles of repair, reuse and circularity. Buildings are seen as material banks and repositories of knowledge for the time of their function and form. Using existing material sources and building stock as well as exemplary references, material resources and typologies are recognised and explored. The creative merging of existing buildings, inventories and new typology is a central part of the
design method. The idea of a concise architectural work as a repaired or newly assembled and inhabited warehouse of building elements, characterised by tectonic clarity and great atmospheric density, is the studio's goal.
Teaching Method
Guided project work in the design studio. A seminar week focussing on the studio topic is an integral part of the design studio.

Professional Competence
  • read places: examine, understand and document the inventory (you only see what you understand).
  • make use of references: analyse, understand and document examples of architectural history and typologically related projects, going beyond formal aspects to grasp permanent qualities.
  • make use of the inventory: use existing elements for their design.
  • scale: know and understand sizes and distances and apply this understanding to work simultaneously at different scales.
  • define space: know and understand the basics of architectural space on the scale of the city as well as on the scale of the house.
  • interpret proportions: know and understand dimensional relationships and body proportions.
  • structure: know and understand the basics of structural order and its significance in relation to spatial structure.
  • materialise: use materials and elements coherent and in the sense of the idea.
  • construct: recognise the relevance of constructive solutions for the design and work with them from the outset.

  • develop and evaluate advanced design and organising principles.
  • formulate complex ideas and concepts under guidance and to generate and further develop space-creating solutions based on these.
  • carry out literature research, evaluate collected information and link it with their own project work.

  • justify, argue and defend their own point of view in the context of the group and the topic.

Assessment Methods
Compulsory attendance according to the Study and Assessment Regulation BSc/MSc Architecture, continuous assessment, midterm and final reviews.
The final grade is calculated according to the weighting of the following components: design project (80%) and final presentation (20%).
