Erasmus+ Workshop «Crafting Clay» in the Netherlands
Erasmus+ Workshop «Crafting Clay» in the Netherlands
In March 2026, a team from the Liechtenstein School of Architecture took part in the international «Design by Making» workshop Crafting Clay. The workshop was held from 14 to 22 March 2026 at the regenerative farm Erve Kiekebosch in Empe (NL) and was coordinated by the Amsterdam Academy of Architecture.
The Craft & Structure Unit was represented by the two lecturers Carmen Rist-Stadelmann and Ivo Barão, together with eight students. Alongside 23 other participants from the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (Trondheim), KU Leuven (Brussels), and the Amsterdam Academy of Architecture, they worked intensively on the design and construction of a small storage building, a so-called «hórreo», which will be used in the future to dry herbs from the farm.
Following an experimental phase, during which clay bricks were pressed from locally sourced material and timber construction techniques were tested, the international teams jointly developed designs and realised them directly on site. The foundation consists of salvaged concrete slabs and blocks found on the farm. The walls are made of clay bricks, while the roof structure is constructed from locally sourced timber.
The workshop is part of the three-year Erasmus+ programme «Crafting Clay – Exploring Circularity with Local Earth», led by the University of Liechtenstein. The next workshop will take place in September 2026 in Trondheim, Norway.
