Dr. sc. ETH Daniel Stockhammer, Arch. ETH FH SIA

Assistant Professor
Institute of Architecture and Planning
Current Activity
Daniel Stockhammer is Assistant Professor for Heritage & Cycle-Oriented Architecture at the University of Liechtenstein and, together with Cornelia Faisst, heads the upcycling design studio. As an architect and academic, he works towards the systematic analysis and redesign of the built environment as a repository of material and cultural resources. Convinced that buildings must be constructed for an endless cycle of use and reconfiguration - a concept of borrowing (instead of disposing) resources for a certain time and form - places principles of circularity at the forefront of architectural design. He teaches and conducts symposia and research in the fields of building survey and inventory (e.g. with Leica Geosystems), circular design and construction (e.g. Studio Notre-Dame), and buildings as material banks (API research fund). He has published various articles and books, including Building Additions in Steel / Weiterbauen in Stahl / Continuer en Acier (Park Books, 2018) and Upcycling: Reuse and Repurposing as a Design Principle in Architecture (Triest, 2020), and is responsible for establishing this field of research at the Institute.
Stockhammer graduated from ETH Zurich, the Technical University of Vienna, and Zurich University of Applied Sciences and earned his PhD (Dr.sc.) for his thesis Swiss timber building tradition at the Institute of Historic Building Research and Conservation at ETH Zurich. His working method has been strongly influenced by his studies and work experience with Uta Hassler, Jacques Herzog, Pierre de Meuron, Wolf Prix, and Zaha Hadid.
