Built Heritage and Circularity
The “Built Heritage and Circularity” unit examines the built environment and products of the construction industry as stocks of material and cultural resources. It places what has already been built and produced, together with its long-term preservation and care, at the centre of research and architectural design. Its work focuses on strategies for adapting and reusing the existing fabric, as well as on principles of design for disassembly and circularity. Buildings are thus understood no longer as consumers of resources, but as resource banks that remain usable, adaptable and transformable over the long term.

Our Knowledge and Resource Platforms
Baugedächtnis Liechtenstein is a growing knowledge archive on the built fabric of the Principality and its four-country region. It brings together photographs, architectural drawings and publications from research and teaching on regional building culture, making them accessible to practitioners, policymakers and the public.
The Library of Reuse is an international knowledge and media platform for reuse and circular construction. Founded and curated by Barbara Buser (Insitu), Prof. Dr Catherine De Wolf (ETH Zurich) and Prof. Dr Daniel Stockhammer (University of Liechtenstein), it brings together and communicates knowledge from research, teaching and practice.
ZirkuLIE is a knowledge and networking platform for circular construction in Liechtenstein and Eastern Switzerland. The unit Built Heritage and Circularity is represented on its board and contributes academic expertise to its strategic development and to regional building practice.
